India’s tea production stood at 215.82 million kgs for Jan - May 2012 period

The total tea production of the country, the second largest tea producer of the world, for January - May 2012 period stood at 215.82 million kgs. This is a decline of 11.41% as compared to the total production of 243.62 million kgs of tea during corresponding period last year. 

This decline in production of around 27.79 million kgs of tea for the first five months of the current calendar year was mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions. Besides, the downward trend in the brew production is visible in both north and south India.

During the first five months of 2012, the production of the country's favourite brew in north India was down by 2 million kgs while the production in South India was down by 1.6 million kgs against the same period of 2011, according to the data on estimated tea production released by the Tea Board of India.

Further, the total tea production of the country was down 3.6 million kgs during the month of May this year as compared to same month last year.
