33 SEZ developers get more time for completing their projects

The inter-ministerial board headed by Commerce Secretary S R Rao has given its nod for more time to 33 special economic zone developers for developing their projects. The Board of Approval (BoA) has also agreed to SEZ developers, including Ansal SEZ Projects and Shyam Steel Industries for surrendering their projects.

The BoA has instructed the developers who surrender their projects, to submit a certificate from the respective Development Commissioners which states that no tax/duty benefits under the SEZ Act/ Rules has been availed by the developer or the same have been refunded. The BoA has also approved four new proposals, including Jubilant Infrastructure, which has proposed to set a biotech SEZ in Karnataka.

Different companies demanding more time to develop projects or offering to surrender their project, reflects the slowing enthusiasm of investors in the tax free zone. Profit- linked benefits were the main attraction of the SEZ scheme. But the minimum alternate tax and uncertainty over tax incentives after implementation of the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) has dampened interest in these tax-free enclaves. As an attempt to boost investments, the government has planned to induce some incentives for developers who want to set up SEZs in remote and undeveloped areas.
