Ending the disputes within the alliance caused over naming Presidential candidate, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has managed to combinably name its Vice Presidential candidate as BJP veteran Jaswant Singh. Singh will be fighting against Hamid Ansari who is the incumbent Vice President as well as UPA’s candidate for the said position.

“We have reservations against Hamid Ansari for the way he adjourned Rajya Sabha during the Lokpal debate. We have decided not to give them (Congress-led UPA) a walkover... We have unanimously decided that Jaswant Singh will be the NDA candidate in the vice-presidential poll,” said senior BJP leader LK Advani. By adding further, Advani also said that the UPA-II government did not convene any prior discussions and declared Ansari as preferred candidate.

Presently, Hamid Ansari’s candidature is supported by UPA, BSP and SP while Jaswant Singh is backed by NDA. Besides these two candidates, there were speculations about entry of Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Governor of West Bengal who was reportedly approached by state’s chief minister and TMC’s head - Mamata Banerjee. However, brushing off all speculations, Gandhi said “I have thanked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for having thought of me and suggested to the UPA partners my name for the Vice-Presidential election.”
