The sugar cane production in India is estimated to decline in 2019-20 due to insufficient rains in the major sugar cane producing areas in the country. Maharashtra government lowered its production estimate for October to September from 10.5 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes, while the majors in the industry expects even lower.
The country is planning to start exporting its surplus sugar production in a couple of years. It had estimated about 35 million tonnes in 2018-19. The research and ratings agency Crisil reported that, India might be able to export only 3 million tonnes (mt) of sugar against the previous estimates of 5 million tonnes (mt) amid drought-like conditions in major planting areas.
