In a major relief for farmers reeling under drought like situation in the state, the Haryana Government has brought paddy under crop insurance scheme for 2012-13. The state agriculture department has notified the areas, crops, indemnity level, sum insured and premium rates for the implementation of Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS) in which paddy will be covered during Kharif 2012-13 for the purpose of the crop insurance.
This scheme will be implemented in all villages or village panchayats in districts of Karnal, Kaithal, Jind and Rohtak and under this scheme indemnity level will be 90% and sum insured at normal coverage will be Rs 45,700 per hectare in the entire district. Besides, Agriculture Insurance Company of India will be the implementing agencies for the scheme in Karnal, Kaithal and Jind districts while in Rohtak district IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance Company will be the implementing agencies.
Further, the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme or Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme will not be available for crops and areas where MNAIS is being implemented. All farmers including share-croppers, tenant farmers growing the paddy crop in the defined areas are eligible for coverage under the scheme. Though the scheme will be voluntary for non-loanee farmers growing the crop it will however be compulsory for all loanee farmers who have availed crop loans from financial institutions for notified crop in their notified areas.
