Asian markets trade lower in early deals on Wednesday

Asian market indices are trading lower in early deals on Wednesday, the first trading day of 2019, after results of a private survey showed that China's manufacturing activity in December contracted for the first time in 19 months amid trade tensions with the US. Meanwhile, China and Hong Kong stock markets kicked off the new-year with losses, as two gauges showing manufacturing slipped into contraction in the world’s second-largest economy, adding to slowdown concerns. Japanese markets remain closed for the New Year holidays.

Hang Seng declined 615.82 points or 2.38% to 25,229.88, Straits Times dropped 31.34 points or 1.02% to 3,037.42, Taiwan Weighted slipped 156.58 points or 1.61% to 9,570.83, Shanghai Composite dipped 25.09 points or 1.01% to 2,468.81, KOSPI Shares contracted 28.43 points or 1.39% to 2,012.61, Jakarta Composite decreased 13.14 points or 0.21% to 6,181.36, and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI down by 17.78 points or 1.05% to 1,672.80.
