Amid government’s attempts to boost private sector participation in manufacturing of defence equipment, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has submitted recommendations to Defence Ministry on minimum security criterion for all private sector defence companies. Imposition of penalties and cancellation of contracts with private defence companies which fail to meet prescribed security standards were among the recommendations by the apex trade associations of India.

The industrial body has recommended a standardized template that covers three sets of security audit aspects under the headings - High, Medium and Low, in accordance with the sensitivity of type of products and services provided by such companies. It also suggested that as the companies to fix wire fencings, CCTV cameras, baggage scanners and manual frisking at their facilities.

The apex body also proposed to warn the companies which fail to ensure these security parameters for the first time and contract of the company should be cancelled if it fails to comply with norms even after three warnings. In the next 10 years, India is planning to spend nearly $100 billion on defence forces with major participation from private sector.
