BJP demands PM’s resignation on coal blocks issue

18 Aug 2012 Evaluate
The Opposition on Friday demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's resignation, on the alleged irregularities in allocation of coal blocks which resulted in a potential revenue loss of about Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the public exchequer, as per the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

With regard to this issue, the left parties with the CPM Politburo demanded explanation from the prime minister, as he held the coal ministry between July 2004 and May 2009. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley pointed that the PM is morally, politically and personally responsible for this loss and urged him to introspect on whether he should continue in the position.

Further, BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha rejected the government's argument that it had merely followed the recommendations of the state governments, by declaring that allocation of major minerals is the Centre's job and argued that the central leaders were also responsible for action under the Prevention of Corruption Act, as it was a case of public policy bereft of public interest.
