Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Monday

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Monday after exit poll results suggested another term for the ruling NDA government, even as crude oil prices firmed up. The investors welcomed the exit poll results that predict a thumping majority for the current BJP-led government. Sentiments were also buoyed by positive opening in domestic equities. Meanwhile, foreign funds pulled out Rs 1,057.82 crore in the capital markets on a net basis Thursday, provisional data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 69.59, stronger by 64 paise from its previous close of 70.23 on Friday. The currency touched a high and low of 70.4300 and 69.4450 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 70.16 and for Euro stood at 78.43 on May 17, 2019. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 64.03, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 89.72.
