Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday following the BJP's thumping victory in the Lok Sabha polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led his Bharatiya Janata Party to resounding victory for a second term in the office. Further, strong FIIs inflows and higher domestic equity markets also buoyed sentiments for the rupee. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets, buying shares worth 1,352.20 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. However, rising crude prices and strengthening dollar restricted the rupee's upward move. On the global front, the dollar was on track on Friday to post a small weekly loss after coming off two-year highs on lower US yields as investors feared the Sino-US trade dispute will hurt the US economy more than previously thought.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 69.76, stronger by 26 paise from its previous close of 70.02 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 69.8100 and 69.6800 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 69.76 and for Euro stood at 77.81 on May 22, 2019. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 63.17, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 88.59.
