The Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) has approached the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to allow exports of rapeseed oil and mustard oil in bulk without any restrictions. SEA, president Atul Chaturvedi has said that under the vegetable oils sector, only rapeseed oil and mustard oil are subjected to the condition of maximum pack size of 5 kgs for export, while all other vegetable oils are permitted to be freely exported irrespective of pack size.

He said that the condition on rapeseed oil and mustard oil exports is detrimental to their trade in the international market. It can also adversely affect the farm price of rapeseed and mustard seed and thus decrease the earning potential of these farmers. This year, rapeseed production was to the tune of 85 lakh tonne, which has put tremendous pressure on mustard seed, and farmers are realising Rs 3,500 to Rs 3,600 per quintal against the MSP of Rs 4,200 per quintal.

The exports of mustard oil in bulk may not be in large quantity but it will definitely impact the market sentiment. Therefore, the oil trade body has request the ministry of commerce to consider export of rapeseed oil and mustard oil in bulk without any restrictions. Besides, the Agri Export Policy 2019 aims to remove all the export restrictions on agri products.
