India’s per capita finished steel consumption stands at 70.9 kg in 2018: WSA

The World Steel Association (WSA) in its report showed that India’s per capita finished steel consumption stood at 70.9 kilogram (kg) in 2018, 7.1 per cent higher than 66.2 kg in 2017. The country’s steel consumption has been rising only moderately- from a per head consumption of 58.8 kg in 2014 to 61.3 kg in 2015 and 63.2 kg in 2016.

The global per capita finished steel consumption was 224.5 kg in 2018. Besides, China, the biggest steel producer, stunned with a whopping per capita consumption of 590 kg.

In 2018, the world's total finished steel usage stood at 1712 million tonnes (mt). Besides, India’s share was 5.6 per cent, while China’s share in steel consumption was 48.8 per cent. WSA in its report titled 'Short Range Outlook April 2019' had prophesied Indian steel demand to grow in upwards of seven per cent in 2019 and 2020.
