The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has stated that sugar production of India may fall around 15% in 2019/20 from the year before. The fall is attributed to severe drought that hits to key growing region.

NFCSF said the country could produce 28 to 29 million tonnes (MT) sugar in the 2019/20 crop year starting from October, down from 33 MT this year. It added that the cane area has fallen drastically in Maharashtra due to drought, while the water scarcity could also hit cane yields.

Recently, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) had said that sugar inventories are likely to rise to 14.7 MT at the beginning of the new season on October 1, up 37.4% from a year ago.
