India's silent PM a tragic figure: Washington Post

05 Sep 2012 Evaluate
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was tagged as a tragic figure in an article in the Washington Post, based on some severe criticism faced by the Prime Minister for allowing the economy to slide by not taking politically tough reform decisions. This portrayal was made after Time magazine called him an "underachiever" in its Asia edition, criticizing him for not taking the country forward by implementing major economical reforms.

Many allegations relating to corruption and scams in the government have not helped his cause either. The latest is the coal allocation issue and the national auditor or CAG has alleged that private firms were shown undue favours, allowing them windfall gains of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore.  However, in the article  Manmohan singh is addressed as a respected figure on the world stage, scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government. But, the congress respondend against this and also demanded for an apology from The Washington Post for publishing the article.

Moreover, the opposition BJP has not allowed Parliament to function at all in the current Monsoon session, demanding the PM's resignation, since he was the coal minister at the time the national auditor alleges the scam happened.
