Jairam Ramesh slammed for criticizing IIT, IIM faculty

Environment minister Jairam Ramesh has drawn flak from IIT and IIM faculties across India for criticizing these institutes as not being “world class”. The faculty pointed out that India was investing far less than the developed world in scientific research.

Politicians are also miffed with Jairam’s remarks and BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, 'We cannot have world-class institutions till we have world-class ministers.' He said the party was proud of the IITs and IIMs, adding that 'ministers should refrain from making such statements'. Ironically, India's IIMs don't even figure in the top hundred B schools in the world.

Meanwhile, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, the man in-charge of Education, too broke his silence, and said that “Is any institute world class? These institutes have to be in the top 100-150 names of the world, but that has not happened. Why, is what we have to see.”
