24 Sep 2019 Evaluate

India's food grains output likely to fall at 140.57 million tonnes (MT) in the Kharif season of 2019-20 crop year (July-June) compared to previous year same period's 141.71 MT, in tandem with the erratic and excessive monsoon rains this year. Sowing of Kharif crop is reported to have finished and harvesting will begin from October onwards.

As per the first estimates of Kharif crops production, released by the Ministry of Agriculture, rice production is estimated lower at 100.35 MT for the Kharif season of the 2019-20 as against 102.13 MT in same period previous year. Pulses production has been estimated to be lower at 8.23 MT as against 8.59 MT. However, coarse cereals output might pick up at 32 MT in the kharif season of this year from 30.99 MT in the same season previous year.

Among cash crops, cotton production likely to be similar at 32.27 million bales of 170 kg each for the 2019-20 crop year, as against 32.26 million bales in the previous year. Jute output has been estimated at 9.96 million bales of 180 kg each as against 9.95 million bales in the previous year. Even sugarcane production has been pegged at 377.7 MT for the current year, similar to what was achieved last year.

Kharif crop yield was heavily impacted as heavy rains caused floods in states like Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat, Bihar, Assam, and Maharashtra. Currently, India registered a rise of 5% of more rain so far this year, about 889 mm of rainfall as against the normal of 849.2 mm.
