Cabinet committee meeting on fuel price hike deferred

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) meeting on fuel price hike, which was planned to be held later today, has been deferred owing to the political pressure within government allies over the proposed hike. Further, no new dates have been notified for the meeting.

Oil Minister, S Jaipal Reddy said that an increase in the fuel prices like diesel, cooking gas and kerosene is unavoidable in the near future. Diesel, cooking gas and kerosene rates have not been changed since June 2011 even though cost of production has gone up 28%. The oil ministry had earlier circulated a Cabinet note on fuel price hike. Even the Finance Minister P Chidambaram was reportedly supporting for a hike in fuel prices.

In addition to hike in diesel, cooking gas and kerosene prices, the oil ministry is also looking forward to limit supply of subsidised LPG cylinders to 4 to 6 per household in a year. The ministry's suggestion to CCPA also includes barring households with income of more than Rs 50,000 per month or Rs 6 lakh in a year from getting subsidised LPG cylinders.

State-run oil marketing companies are losing Rs 550 crore each day on under-recoveries as a result of higher crude prices in the global markets. They make a loss of Rs 17 per litre on diesel sales, Rs 32.7 per litre on kerosene sales, and Rs 347 per cylinder on sale of cooking gas every day.
