CMIE envisages telecom subscribers’ base above 1 billion by March 2013

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) in its report revealed that the total number of subscribers is estimated to reach around 1042 million by the end of this fiscal year. It also said that the number of new wireless subscribers is likely to decline by 14%. The report also stated that most of the losses in subscriber base were due to disconnection of unused numbers and the introduction of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme. The MNP requests stood at 54.3 million at the end of June 2012 and are expected to rise further in the coming months.

According to the report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI), Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Uninor had witnessed a decline in their subscribers while Aircel and Loop Mobile were the only operators that had witnessed a growth in their subscriber base during the period under review.
