Central pool holds record stock of foodgrains

On the back of record production and procurement of grains, the country has a record stock of foodgrains more than double the buffer norm in the Central pool. As on July 01, 2012, there was 80.51 million tonnes (MT) foodgrains in the pool against the minimum buffer norms of 31.9 MT.

Besides, against the minimum buffer norms of 20.1 MT the actual stock of the wheat is 49.80 MT. Similarly, rice stock in the pool was 30.70 MT against the buffer norms of 11.8 MT.

Last year the government had a stock of 64 MT as on July 1 against the buffer requisition of 31.9 MT. As on July 1, 2011, the total amount of wheat in godowns was 37.1 MT against buffer norm of 20.1 MT. The same was 26.85 MT for rice against buffer norm of 11.8 MT last year.
