Uma Bharti demands heritage status for river Ganga; likely to go for a 39-day yatra

20 Sep 2012 Evaluate
Despite opposition's and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government allies' moment against government reforms and a Bharat Bandh on Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Uma Bharti will be rallying in Kolkata for a quiet different reason. She has decided to conduct a yatra, demanding the heritage status for river Ganga in view of the sanctity of the river. The 39 day moment will start from Ganga Sagar on September 21 and will be ending at Gangotri on October 28.

Considering Uma Bharti's proposed Ganga Samagra Yatra, the West Bengal government has banned speeches and public meetings, during the time when the yatra passes through the eastern state. Uma Bharti has protested against this decision of West Bengal government and urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to reconsider the decision as restrictions will adversely affect the motive of her yatra in West Bengal.
