Retail inflation surges to over three-year high of 5.54% in November

India’s retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) surged to a more than three-year high of 5.54% in November as compared to 4.62% in October, and 2.33% in November 2018. The spike in inflation was mainly due to costlier food products like vegetables, pulses and protein-rich items. It is also over the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) medium-term target of 4%. The previous high was in July 2016, when the CPI-based inflation stood at 6.07%. Besides, inflation in the food basket, which is a gauge to measure changes in kitchen budgets, jumped to 10.01% in November. This compares with 7.89% October and (-) 2.61% in the year ago-month.

As per the data of the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the CPI (Rural, Urban, Combined) on Base 2012=100 for November 2019, stood at 5.27%, 5.76% and 5.54%, respectively, compared to 1.71%, 3.12% and 2.33%, respectively in November 2018. The index value of CPI for combined stood at 148.6. The data also showed that consumer food price index (CFPI) for all India Rural and Urban for November 2019 stood at 8.83% and 12.26%, respectively, compared to -2.40% and -3.04%, respectively in November 2018. The index value of CFPI for combined stood at 151.6 for the month of November.

Within the food items, the inflation for vegetables shot up to 35.99%, as against 26.10% in October. Inflation in cereals and products was 3.71%, pulses and products at 13.94% and milk and products at 3.46%. Further, the inflation also moved up for oils and fats 2.64%, spices 4.33% and sugar and confectionery 2.06%. However, the inflation eased for fruits 3.29%, prepared meals, snacks, sweets etc 1.94%, non-alcoholic beverages 1.35%, meat and fish 9.38% and egg 6.20% in November 2019. The inflation for housing eased marginally to 4.49%. The inflation for clothing and footwear eased to 1.30%, while the CPI inflation of fuel and light moved up to (-) 1.93% in November 2019.
