With the relinquishment of Trinamool Congress leader, Mukul Roy from the post of Railway Minister, the Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways, CP Joshi on Monday has formally took the additional charge as Railway Minister until the Cabinet reshuffle takes place.  The Cabinet reshuffle is expected to be on Tuesday.

The left out of previous Railway Minister was in conjunction with the withdrawal of party chief Mamata Banerjee from the government.  However, Joshi has been assigned with the additional charge by the President Pranab Mukherjee on advice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The announcement was made after a meeting of Prime Minister with the President amid speculation of a Cabinet reshuffle. A reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers are more likely after the TMC pulled out of UPA government.

Along with the resignation of Roy, the President also accepted the resignation of five other members of Trinamool Congress after the party, which has 19 MPs in the Lok Sabha, withdrew its support from UPA government. Thus, Indian Railways gets a new minister, third time in a year, after Dinesh Trivedi vacated his post for Mukul Roy in March.
