FDI in retail not a threat for small retailers: Montek

24 Sep 2012 Evaluate

Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, amid the severe criticism of government’s decision to allow FDI in multi brand retail has said that FDI in retail is not a threat to small retailers and modern retail is an expanding segment and it would more than double in a very short period.

In his opinion, the government’s decision to notify FDI in retail has given hopes for employment opportunities and modernization of the sector and this is a structural change. The retail sector is the second biggest employer in India with 44 million jobs at present. The quality of jobs in traditional retail is very low and modern retail produces better quality of jobs.

He further stated that he don’t believe modern retail can expand fast enough to increase real wages and it is completely wrong.
