CWC supports PM’s economic reforms

Demanding opposition to play a more constructive role, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Tuesday backed the government’s decision on economic reforms including FDI in multi-brand retail and declared that it was essential to control the inflation. The meeting also supported the government's move to reduce fuel subsidy by hiking diesel prices and capping subsidized LPG cylinders.

The meeting took two-hour-long at 10 Janpath residence of the Congress party President Sonia Gandhi, who chaired the meeting. Addressing the meeting, the prime minister Manmohan Singh pointed out the need to implement economic reforms even at the cost of losing valuable allies like TMC. He also confirmed that it was inevitable move as flagship development programmes cannot be implemented till the economy becomes strong.Further, Finance Minister P Chidambaram pointed CWC that the ways to improve the nation's economy are to bring in more investment, improve productivity, contain inflation and curtail subsidy.
