States urged to sow winter rabi crop early to maximize yield

26 Sep 2012 Evaluate

In order to maximize yield by making the best use of available soil moisture the states should go for early sowing of the winter rabi crop, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar stated at the two-day National Conference on Agriculture For Rabi Campaign 2012. The Agriculture Minister voiced that this rabi will set the tone for the 12th Plan and it will be possible to achieve the target of 4% growth in agriculture production during the five year plan period.

The minister acknowledged that early sowing should take place especially in rainfed areas which will be benefitted by moisture available in the soil due to wide-spread rains in August and September.

For 2012-13, the foodgrain target is 249.52 million tonnes and Pawar expressed hope that it can be achieved. The agriculture minister also stated that due to erratic rainfall the production loss suffered in summer kharif crop can be compensated with rigorous efforts.
