Ajit Pawar resignation; Baramati closes till 11 am on Wednesday

Opposing the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, businesses in Maharashtra's Baramati town, a stronghold of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), remained closed down in the morning hours till 11 am on Wednesday. The resignations will be discussed at a crucial NCP meeting on Wednesday afternoon in Mumbai, where top party leaders and all legislators are expected to remain present. 

Overnight protests continued on Ajit Pawar's resignation, pushing Maharashtra into a political crisis, confounding Congress. The resignation of NCP leader has also led to protest in other parts of the state, including Yavatmal, Aurangabad and Pune. The decision to quit was taken by Ajit Pawar, when the allegations came up on the irrigation contracts worth over Rs.20,000 crore, which happened during  1999-2009 under his ministry. Due to NCP legislators' pursual to quit the ruling Democratic Front coalition, all the remaining 19 NCP ministers had offered the withdrawal and sent in their resignations to state party chief Madhukarrao Pichhad.
