The Ministry of Agriculture in its second estimate of foodgrain production has stated that India is likely to hit the record total foodgrain production of 291.95 million tonne (MT) for the crop year 2019-20 as against last year's 285.21 MT. Cumulative rainfall in the country during the monsoon season (June-September 2019) was 10% higher than the Long Period Average (LPA), has helped for the record grain production.
Out of the total output, food grain production is estimated to be 142.36 MT from the kharif (summer) season and 149.60 MT from the rabi (winter) season of the current year. Food grain basket includes wheat, rice, cereals and pulses.
Wheat yield is likely to mark record of 106.21 MT in 2019-20 crop year. Wheat output has been rising year-on-year (Y-o-Y) and the previous record of 103.60 MT was achieved during the 2018-19 crop year (July-June). As per Ministry reports, the production of most of the crops for the 2019-20 crop year has been estimated higher than their normal production.
