Despite the continuing opposition from different allies and opposition party, the government has made it clear that it will not roll back the decision as it will impact the interests of the nation. He emphasized that the foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail trading will help farmers in getting good price for their produce besides creating lakhs of jobs.
Amid addressing the concern that whether small shopkeepers would be impacted by big retail chains, Sharma confirmed that the policy reform was made after consulting extensively with all the stakeholders including farmers, consumers and industry leaders. He came out with assertion after UPA constituent DMK confirmed that it will support any opposition-sponsored resolution in Parliament on the issue.
Some UPA allies including Samajwadi Party also opposed the reform, while Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P), another outside supporter with two members in Lok Sabha, has announced its withdrawal from backing the government. He also pointed out that the respective states can decide whether to allow foreign retailers to open up of stores in their region.
