Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Wednesday, despite weak domestic equities amid escalating tension between India and China near the border. Meanwhile, strengthening US dollar overseas, foreign fund outflows and concerns over rising corona virus cases worldwide have capped the upside. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,478.52 crore on Tuesday, exchange data showed. Health ministry data showed the death toll in India due to corona virus rose to 11,903 and the number of infections rose to over 3,54,065, while the number of cases globally has crossed 81.73 lakh with death toll topped at 4.41 lakh. On the global front, the US dollar held firm against its rivals after US retail sales jumped far more than expected in May, while risk-sensitive currencies were hobbled by concerns about the corona virus and geopolitical tensions in Asia.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 76.15, stronger by 5 paise from its previous close of 76.20 on Tuesday. The currency touched a high and low of 76.2550 and 76.1100 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 76.10 and for Euro stood at 85.52 on June 15, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.96, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 94.84.
