Area under kharif crops rises 39% to 131.34 lakh hectare in 2020-21

The data from the department of agriculture has showed that sowing area of important Kharif crops rose by 39.38% to 131.34 lakh hectare in 2020-21 as compared to 94.23 lakh hectare in 2019-20. The surge in planting has been led by oilseeds and coarse cereals. The country has received the rainfall of 108.3 mm against the normal of 82.4 mm during the period from June 01, 2020 to June 18, 2020.

As per the data, the area under pulses doubled to 4.58 lakh hectare in 2020-21 as compared to 2.22 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year. Similarly, the area under course cereals surged to 19.16 lakh hectare as compared to 7.83 lakh hectare. The area under oilseeds rose to 14.36 lakh hectare as compared to 1.63 lakh hectare. The area under sugarcane inched up to 48.63 lakh hectare as compared to 48.01 lakh hectare.

The area under cotton jumped to 28.77 lakh hectare as compared to 18.18 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year. However, the area under rice stood at 10.05 lakh hectare as compared to 10.28 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year. The area under jute and mesta came to 5.78 lakh hectare area as compared to 6.08 lakh hectare during the corresponding period of last year.
