Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Friday

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday amidst firm domestic equities, despite worries over surging corona virus cases and its impact on economy. Moreover, the expectation of more dollar inflows after the stake sale of Jio has also supported the rupee. Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund predicted the Indian economy would contract by 4.5 percent in 2020, and said it expects global output to shrink 4.9 percent this year, a sharper fall than the 3 percent contraction predicted in April. The health ministry data showed the death toll in India due to corona virus rose to 15,301 and the number of the number of infections rose to 490,401, while the number of cases around the world has crossed 96.09 lakh with death toll topped at 4.88 lakh. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equity shares worth Rs 1,050.61 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 75.48, stronger by 17 paise from its previous close of 75.65 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 75.5450 and 75.4350 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 75.70 and for Euro stood at 85.70 on June 24, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 71.03, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 94.72.
