Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Wednesday, tracking gains in the domestic equity market after the human clinical trials for corona virus vaccine were initiated in India. The Indian Council of Medical Research said human clinical trials for a potential vaccine for corona virus had been initiated in the country with approximately 1,000 volunteers participating in the exercise for each of the two indigenously developed vaccine candidates. The Drugs Controller General of India has permitted two vaccines, one developed by Bharat Biotech International in collaboration with ICMR and another one by Zydus Cadila Healthcare to go in for the first and second phase of human clinical trials. Further, weakness in American currency too supported the rupee, though foreign fund outflows and fears over rising corona virus cases weighed on investor sentiment and restricted rupee gains. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,565.62 crore on Tuesday, exchange data showed. Health ministry data showed the death toll in India due to corona virus rose to 24,309 and the number of infections spiked to 9,36,181, while the number of cases around the world has crossed 1.32 crore with death toll topped at 5.77 lakh.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 75.29, stronger by 13 paise from its previous close of 75.42 on Tuesday. The currency touched a high and low of 75.3550 and 75.2450 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 75.15 and for Euro stood at 85.12 on July 13, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.30, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 95.11.
