Rupee strengthens against US dollar on firm domestic equities

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Tuesday tracking firm domestic equities amid hopes of corona virus vaccine. A corona virus vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford appears safe and induces a strong immune response within the body, scientists announced after the first phase of human trials. Further, foreign fund inflows too supported the recovery in the domestic currency. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,709.97 crore on Monday, exchange data showed. Meanwhile, Health ministry data showed the death toll in India due corona virus rose to 28,084 and the number of infections has touched 1,155,191. The number of cases around the world has crossed 1.47 crore with the death toll topped at 6.09 lakh.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 74.76, stronger by 15 paise from its previous close of 74.91 on Monday. The currency touched a high and low of 74.8250 and 74.7325 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 75.10 and for Euro stood at 85.49 on July 17, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.06, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 94.25.
