Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Tuesday

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Tuesday due to a firm opening of domestic equities tracking positive cues from global markets. While, investors are cautious ahead of the two-day US Fed meeting concluding tomorrow. Though, foreign fund outflows and rising corona virus cases globally and US-China friction weighed on investor sentiment and capped rupee's gains. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equity shares worth Rs 453.31 crore on Monday, exchange data showed. The health ministry data showed the death toll in India due to corona virus rose to 33,425 and the number of infections rose to 14,83,156, while the number of cases around the world has crossed 1.66 crore with death toll topped at 6.6 lakh.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 74.73, stronger by 10 paise from its previous close of 74.83 on Monday. The currency touched a high and low of 74.8650 and 74.7100 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 74.86 and for Euro stood at 86.94 on July 24, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.40, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 95.41.
