Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Friday

Indian rupee strengthened against US dollar on Friday despite heavy selling in domestic equities tracking a tech-led plunge on Wall Street. Further, Data showed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 7.72 crore on Thursday, too supported sentiment. Meanwhile, American currency steadied against its peers as traders awaited key US jobs data that might cast doubt on the strength of economic recovery from the corona virus pandemic outbreak. Investors’ focus now will be on the non-farm payrolls number that will be released from the United States with expectations that it could come in line with the previous month’s number and that could keep the volatility low for the dollar.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 73.34, stronger by 13 paise from its previous close of 73.47 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 73.4700 and 73.2650 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 73.01 and for Euro stood 86.89 on September 02, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 68.85, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 97.60.
