Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday helped by persistent foreign capital inflows in the domestic equities. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,164.32 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed. Meanwhile, investors are cautiously awaiting GDP figures that scheduled to be released on Monday. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Data showed, India witnessed a record single-day spike of 77,266 corona virus cases, taking its Covid tally to 33.87 lakh. Total deaths due to the virus have now risen to 61,529. On the global front, the US dollar held gains against its major peers after the Federal Reserve’s aggressive new strategy to lift employment and increased tolerance for higher inflation pushed US bond yields up.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 73.42, stronger by 40 paise from its previous close of 73.82 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 73.8750 and 73.2900 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 74.35 and for Euro stood at 87.87 on August 26, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 69.92, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 97.76.
