Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Thursday, supported by firm domestic equities amid positive cues from global markets. Further, weakness in American currency overseas ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) meeting taking place later in the day too supported domestic currency. Though, surging corona virus cases in the country and foreign fund outflows capped rupee’s gains. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 959.09 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 263.97 crore on Wednesday, exchange data showed. Union health ministry data showed that India recorded 95,735 new cases of the corona virus disease on Thursday, which pushed the overall tally to 4,465,863.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 73.40, stronger by 15 paise from its previous close of 73.55 on Wednesday. The currency touched a high and low of 73.5000 and 73.3350 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 73.42 and for Euro stood 86.80 on September 08, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 69.12, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 96.56.
