Rupee strengthens against US dollar on Thursday

Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Thursday, tracked by firm domestic equities following robust US data and stimulus hopes. Further, weak American currency too supported investor sentiments. Though, surging corona virus cases globally and foreign fund outflows capped its gains. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 712.48 crore on Wednesday, exchange data showed. On the global front, the US dollar weakened against its major crosses after government officials expressed hope that another stimulus package could be passed to help ease the economic impact of the corona virus induced recession.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 73.41, stronger by 35 paise from its previous close of 73.76 on Wednesday. The currency touched a high and low of 73.6050 and 73.3300 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 73.85 and for Euro stood 86.17 on September 29, 2020. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 69.92, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 94.97.
