Following the severe drought situation across the Karnataka state, the agricultural production is likely to witness a shortfall of 2.5 million tonnes (MT) in the state, according to Agriculture Scientist and University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS), Bangalore Vice-Chancellor Narayana Gowda.
Last year the agricultural production in the state was in tune of 12.5 MT but due to scanty rainfall this year the production may be around 10 MT. There is still hope for some Rabi crops if rain arrives and UAS has suggested farmers to go in for short term crops including Ragi, Jowar and cereals.
Besides, the Milk Procuring Committees and Animal Husbandry and Veteranay Services have been asked to educate farmers to grow fodder. This is been done in order to over come the fodder shortage. Since the next spell of rain is expected only in July next year the UAS has warned that the state may face severe shortage.
Further, UAS has recommended growing cereals which can be grown in less water, in command areas, Ragi and certain varieties of paddy can be grown. Also, in order to encounter the shortage of seed that may be felt in the coming rainy season it has given top priority for seed production.
