Delhi HC issues notice to TV Today over Khurshid's defamation case

The Delhi High Court on Friday issued a notice to the TV Today group on the defamation suit filed by the Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid's wife Louise Khurshid. Hearing the petition, Justice Valmiki J Mehta, issued summons to 14 respondents, including TV Today Chairman and MD Aroon Purie and asked them to file their reply within four weeks. 

Louise Khurshid, wife of law minister Salman Khurshid had filed a civil defamation suit against a television group for airing a programme alleging financial irregularities in a trust run by the couple. As per the reports, damages of around Rs 100 crore has been claimed in the lawsuit filed by Louise against the TV Today group for broadcasting the defamatory programme on its channels. And also the court has sought clarification from Louise Khurshid whether the suit was filed in her personal capacity or on behalf of Dr Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust.

According to the TV Today report, the union social welfare and empowerment ministry had granted Rs 71.50 lakh to the Khurshids' Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust for distributing tricycles and hearing aids to the disabled in 17 districts of Uttar Pradesh. However, the channel earlier aired a sting operation claiming to show Salman Khurshid's trust for the disabled had forged signatures to acquire central grants and thereby to deprive the physically challenged who were eligible for grants under a scheme.
