Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Thursday, supported by weakness of the American currency that is at the lowest level since April 2018 as investors continue to look at riskier equities amid hopes that Covid-19 vaccine roll outs would help the world beat the pandemic. The vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca received authorization on Wednesday for emergency use in the United Kingdom. Further, sustained foreign fund inflows too supported rupee sentiment. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,824.52 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) sold shares of Rs 587.43 crore in the Indian equity market on Wednesday, exchange data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 73.06, stronger by 25 paise from its previous close of 73.31 on Wednesday.
