Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday, despite volatility in domestic equities ahead of the tabling of the Economic Survey in the Parliament, later in the day. Markets will also be awaiting cues from the Union Budget on Monday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 3,712.51 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,736.92 crore in the Indian equity market on Thursday, exchange data showed. On the global front, US dollar gained as lingering worries about a coordinated assault on hedge fund short positions in the United States boosted demand for safe-haven assets.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 72.96, stronger by 9 paise from its previous close of 73.05 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 73.0125 and 72.9425 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 72.81, and for Euro stood 88.56 on January 27, 2021. While the reference rate for the Yen stood at 70.23, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 100.05.
