Cabinet reshuffle: Manmohan's new team to take charge on Monday

29 Oct 2012 Evaluate
A day after the biggest reshuffle,  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's new team will take charge on Monday with 17 new ministers and old ones relinquish responsibilities. The new ministers are expected to take charge of their respective posts on Tuesday.

Terming the reshuffle a blend on youth and experience, Singh hoped that this reshuffle would help remove the taint of scams and policy paralysis that his government faces. The next general election is due in May 2014 i.e. 18 months from now. Though the average age of the union cabinet has reduced only marginally from 59.6 to 58.9, the youth emphasis is visible in the selection of ministers of state with independent charge. Moreover, Salman Khurshid was named the new External Affairs Minister and Veerappa Moily given Petroleum portfolio in the major reshuffle of the Council of Ministers by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who inducted  new faces including Chiranjeevi and Manish Tewari.

However, the much talked about revamp of the government that has been facing criticism over perceived policy paralysis and corruption allegations saw Pawan Kumar Bansal getting Railways while S Jaipal Reddy lost the high profile Petroleum and moved to Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
