01 Nov 2012 Evaluate

Essar Steel has introduced an agricultural development and training programme to improve the livelihood of backward tribal communities in Kirandul, Chhattisgarh, as inhabitants there are dependent on traditional knowledge, single crop farming and non-timber forest produce. The Kirandul basti is a small hamlet situated near Essar Steel's beneficiation plant. Through this initiative, the company aims to help tribal villagers improve their economic returns.

The company has given training of innovative agriculture practices to around 20 tribal villagers, in the first phase of the training programme. Along with villagers, the Kirandul CSR team developed an agricultural field covering two acres and guided villagers to use modern agricultural techniques to grow vegetables and other crops. During the first phase, the average income generated was approximately Rs 30,000.

After this first phase of the project, which has been useful to the villagers, the company now plans to expand the training programme to the neighboring villages.
