India’s rice production to decline by 5%

01 Nov 2012 Evaluate

The rice production in the country is expected at be around 99 million tonnes (MT) this year, as per reports complied by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This is a decline of 5% compared to a record production of 104.31 MT in the 2011-12 crop year (July-June). Based on a higher yield the country’s 2012-13 rice crop production was raised 1 MT to 99 MT.

The government’s first advance estimate has pegged the kharif (summer) crop production at 85.6 MT. This is on back of late-season monsoon rains received in Eastern and Northeastern rice areas in the month of August and September which are quite favourable for the kharif crop.

Besides, United Nation's body Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the month of August had tentatively pegged India’s rice output at 98.5 MT due to late onset of monsoon rains leading to deficit in key northern and southern growing areas.

For 2012-13, USDA has forecast global rice output at a record 465.1 MT marginally above the output achieved in 2011-12 at 464.9 MT. The average global yield is forecast at a record 4.37 tonne per hectare, fractionally above 2011-12.
