In an effort to free the power sector, especially generation, transmission and distribution (T&D) of the road blocks that are hindering its progress, the government on Nov 2 announced its plan to come out with a 10-year action plan, to strengthen the sector. The action plan is expected to be finalized next month after taking views from all the concerned parties, ministries and departments.
About 50 percent of the stakeholders have already sent their responses to the plan, Department of Heavy Industry, Joint Secretary Ambuj Sharma said at a conference organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The domestic power sector is grappling with a slew of problems including acute fuel shortages and poor financial health of distribution companies (DISCOMS). However, specific steps will be formulated for time bound completion of projects in generation and T&D sector and will also focus on skill development in various segments of the power sector.
Besides, Planning Commission Advisor (Energy) I A Khan has specified about 10 locations that have been identified for smart grid projects and a pilot project is being implemented in Puducherry. However, in the ongoing 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17), the country is expected to see a capacity addition of about 88,000 MW.
