Rupee weakens against US dollar on Thursday

Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Thursday as the American currency strengthened overseas, while global investors remained focused on US inflation data and European Central Bank meeting both due later in the day for direction. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 846.37 crore in cash, and Rs 271.7 crore in index futures on Wednesday, exchange data showed. The Union health ministry data showed on Thursday that India saw 6,148 deaths, the highest single-day toll so far, which took the overall tally to 3,59,676.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 72.98, weaker by 1 paise from its previous close of 72.97 on Wednesday. The currency touched a high and low of 72.9950 and 72.9400 respectively. The reference rate for the dollar stood at 73.20, and for Euro stood 89.42 on June 2, 2021. While the reference rate for the 100 Yen stood at 66.72, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 103.63.
