Taj corrider case: HC rejects PILs petitions against Mayawathi

As a great respite to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday rejected all the Public Interest Litigations (PIL) against the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister in the Taj corridor case. Passing the order, the bench comprising justice Imtiyaz Murtaza and justice Ashwani Kumar Singh said all petitions were devoid of merit and were accordingly being dismissed.

However, the Lucknow bench of the court also dismissed the petitions against her cabinet colleague Naseemuddin Siddiqui. Claiming that today’s decision is a big relief for Mayawati, Mishra said the PILs against her were politically motivated and aimed at defaming the BSP chief.  BSP leader and Miss Mayawati's counsel Mr Satish Chandra Mishra termed the petitions filed in the case as politically motivated and pursued with malafide intention. As many as seven public interest litigations were filed against Mayawati at the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.

However, the petitioners have announced to challenge the Allahabad High Court order in the apex court soon.  The special CBI court had in June 2007 dropped proceedings against Mayawati and Siddiqui for lack of prosecution sanction, which was not granted by the then governor. Further, the court decided that an earlier decision which suspended the case against her remains valid.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had quashed an FIR into her disproportionate assets case saying the agency had exceeded its brief by looking into Mayawati's assets while investigating the Taj corridor case.  After this, three PILs were filed in 2009 challenging the decision of the CBI court. Later three more PILs were filed in this connection.
