On the back of increased production in North India, the country’s tea production rose marginally to 690.31 million kg in the first half this fiscal, as per the latest data compiled by Tea Board. During April-September period of 2011-12 fiscal the country had produced 688.67 million kg of tea.
In April-September of 2012-13 fiscal, tea production in North India which comprises the major tea growing regions of Assam and West Bengal, rose by 1% and stood at 562.67 million kg compared to 559.82 million kg in the year-ago period. Output of the brew, however, declined marginally to 127.64 million kg from 128.85 million kg in the reviewed period.
In August 2012, tea production rose to 152.59 million kg compared to 143.08 million kg in August 2011, while, the output increased to 149.25 million kg in September 2012 from 148.39 million kg in September 2011.
After Kenya, China and Sri Lanka who are the largest exporter of the brew globally, the country stands as fourth. Around 15 states in the country cultivate tea spanning across 5.79 lakh hectares, which accounts for 16% of the total area under the brew in the world.
