Anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal and main opposition party BJP on Monday attacked the UPA government of its attempt to make the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) a multi-member body, a move that came under sharp criticism from the opposition and civil society.

Kejriwal blamed the government of trying to weaken the CAG office, to make CAG its private agent. Also BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu mentioned about the government's attempt is aimed at undermining the authority of the CAG's office. The Prime Minister had earlier asserted that the observations of CAG are disputable and will be challenged before the Public accounts committee.  Earlier, according to Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V Narayanasamy, CAG has become more impatient and the government is actively considering a proposal to make the official auditor a multi-member body.

Reacting to Narayanasamy's remarks, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha attacked the proposal as a very bad idea and also unconstitutional. Moreover, Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy said that government was trying to dilute the authority and curtail autonomy of CAG because of its reports.
